So recently I tried installing iDeneb in VirtualBox, but after finding out VMware Player supported creating new VMs a few months back (I hadn’t used it since v2), I decided to try it out again. I quite like it. Especially Unity. It’s a lot better than VirtualBox’s Seamless Mode. And since VMware has Tools for Mac OS X, it’s natural that it would be better supported, well, I expect. After all, a vanilla install can be done quite easily on VMware, while all you get with VirtualBox is an install without networking, shared folders, any of that.

This method has been tested on VMware Player 3.0.1 with iDeneb 1.6 lite. As VMware Workstation is quite similar, this tutorial is expected to work under it as well.

Thanks to this tutorial for some pointers.

You know what you doing, move zig

Create a new virtual machine

Select the iDeneb iso, and click next

Set the OS to Other -> FreeBSD (I haven’t tested 64-bit)

Give your VM a name, like “Mac OS X” or something as unoriginal as you want

Make the hard drive about 15G or so

You probably are at the end of the wizard now (unless you’re using Workstation)

Edit the VM (this can be done through the wizard if you’re using Workstation)

Set the RAM to something you like, at least 512M

Go to the network adapter page and change it to bridged

Close the settings

Play/start/whatever the VM

As soon as the “press any key to load Mac OS X or F8″ screen comes up, press F8

Type in: “-v -f busratio=10 cpus=1″ without the quotes (your mileage may vary for busratio, maybe try 7 instead?)

Wait for the flying text party to end

Skip past the welcome, license, etc until you get to the destination selection screen

Go into Utilities -> Disk Utility

Erase the disc using “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” (this should be default), with whatever name you like

Go on, but then go into Customize

SELECT THESE: Kernel 9.7.0, ACPI fix, Old PS/2 drivers, ICH fix (This list is off my memory, please tell me if this combo fails! Also I don’t know how to get sound working)

Wait. Twiddle your thumbs. Try to wonder what spectrum Portal is trying to comply with. Fall off a cliff (well no don’t fall off a cliff).

Upon restart, when Chameleon is counting down, give it the flags you used to go into the installer

Go through the post install wizard

Go into Terminal

Run this command: sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

Add these two lines:
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1280×800x32</string>
Configure the string as you wish.

For the <string></string> after <key>Kernel Flags</key>, fill it in with the flags from before (without the -v if you like the pretty Apple loading screen and/or if you hate flying text parties)

Save

Download the appropriate file from here (I used darwin-wks7)

Go into VM -> Settings and mount the darwin.iso inside the package you downloaded

Install

You’re forced to reboot

Wait, enjoy, have fun, because you’re done!

Hey look a screenshot (with the wallpaper changed to aurora)

You’re welcome. I love you too.

REGARDING VMWARE TOOLS
According to the provider of the VMware Tools they only support:
* Copy & paste between host and guest
* Transparent mouse entry and exit to guest
* Shared folders
* VMware SVGA II video driver

I have only been able to verify copy&paste and shared folder functionality. I cannot get mouse entry/exit working, and I have not attempted to test the video driver.

The bus is dominated by those younger than me… and they’re all shorter in comparison to me, with higher voices, and they’re all happy. Or just seeing them in school, doing whatever they are doing. They’re enjoying their life, while here I am in the senior school. The thought that I’m edging closer and closer to the HSC, and further and further away from the past… it dawns on me. I wish that thought would go away, and I want to forget. But it is reality, isn’t it. I can’t fight that.

That’s why I decided to try out Tumblr today. Unfortunately, no WordPress importing, no proper exporting, no visible way that it’s getting income (so that I can rest safe knowing that it won’t die on me suddenly one day thanks to going bankrupt or whatever), flexibility is limited by things like no plugins/server-side code etc, and the list goes on.

But I still tried it anyway. Why? Because as Automattic had once on their website… “Blogging is too hard”. For some people, it isn’t a problem at all. But WordPress for me has a ridiculously overloaded interface, and QuickPress is to me a lazy method of simplifying things. In the end, I don’t like navigating through the strangely clean looking bloat that is WordPress.

Tumblr is a dream, in that regard. The dashboard is clean, simple, and amazing. But really, weighing that (and some other advantages) against the downsides, makes me in the end, go back to WordPress.

So, now what? I still haven’t solved my problem. I like the tumblelogging methodology. (so I don’t look like I’m dead, maybe? That’s not necessary, but I digress…) So. Now what? Well, I’m a user of Firefox, and I’ve been using a plugin for it called Echofon. (which I still fondly remember as “Twitterfox”, because it doesn’t sound like it was made up as a corporate cliché) I like Echofon, as it’s faster. I absolutely hate desktop Twitter clients. Sure, it’s still a single click to get into a Twitter interface, but I prefer my minimalism and having some things intertwined in ways that can probably be explained but I can’t.

That gave me motivation to look up a WordPress plugin for Firefox. And I landed on… ScribeFire. I’m quite liking it so far…

Except for its heavy usage of screen space (about half of the browsing area is taken up by it), and the tracking code option it has enabled by default. It’s quite shady, and I don’t like that. But at least you still can turn it off. In any case, I’ll see how this goes.

I’ll give it a 4/5 in my head for now.

At my work experience at Net Starter, I talked to one of the designers about using Photoshop to create designs.

I said I liked doing concepts/etc in HTML because it was more flexible and accurate, something along the lines of that.

I recently decided to start trying out designing in Photoshop first. I’m quite liking this method so far now.

There are some web scripts out there that, for the purpose they serve, allow for users of different privilege levels, and need to let users register and login. Any administration tools are shown with a nice link to anyone with the proper privileges.

Thing is, mintypublish. Along with other CMSes. CMSes are aimed at doing things like static websites without the hassle of dealing with things like HTML.

But if you’re going to show an admin link or a login area in a supposedly static site edited by only a very small group of people, where everyone else can only read the website, that’s just not going to look good, especially as most users don’t need such access.

So say something like WordPress, which I’m using right now. To login, you have to add
/wp-admin/
to the end of the root URL of your WordPress installation. For mintypublish (I recently released 0.5.0 by the way, if you’d like to check it out, go here), I apply the same idea. You have
/mintypublish/
at the end of the root URL of the mintypublish installation. Are either methods convenient? Not particularly, unless you have a bookmark or have a good typing speed (which I do, but nevertheless…)

So what could you do other than that? Have an even shorter access method? Let’s take WordPress. Let’s chop off the
-admin
bit, and for mintypublish, make it
mp
. There. Short and easy to access! Only two letters! It seems to make sense somewhat.

But I still don’t like that.

A few months back, I made a promise to myself. As a person who liked web design and development and new, shiny things, I should be staying on the cutting edge. That’s what I’ve always been doing these past few years. I jumped to try out the leaked pre-beta of Windows 7, and kept using each of the public betas until release. Things like Ubuntu, web scripts, programs, if I see the term “beta” next to “stable”, I practically always go for beta. Giving back feedback is something I have time for, as well.

Thing is, it’s all and well until things start to break. The recently released jQuery 1.4 rc1 when dropped into some of my projects immediately broke a few of the plugins I depended on. Brilliant!

This applies to other things such as Firefox as well. Add-on developers usually don’t tend to begin adding compatibility to point releases until they’re finalised.

It makes me think.
